Chapter 12

Armyn

She’d given him peace only to snatch it away with a few words.

Unable to decipher the conglomeration of emotions blaring from her eyes, his body refused to move while the hurt of her declaration sank deep into his bones. The fury she’d banked with her delicious scent came roaring back, moving his feet before he gave them permission.

She reached the bottom of the stairs before he caught up with her, the gleaming locks of her hair teasing him as they trailed behind her on the breeze. Despite his anger, he couldn’t forget the tears she’d shed, so he resisted the urge to yank her backward by the silvery strands, and instead wrapped his hand around her bicep.

Cinza’s slight weight made her no match for him, his grip stopping her forward momentum so suddenly her body jerked as though it’d hit a wall.

“Let me go.”

Her voice sounded thick with tears, adding confusion to his anger.

“I’ve told you before. Never.”

“You must.”

“No, I don’t.”

Shimmering blue irises reflected the moonlight back up to him as she swiveled her head to meet his furious gaze.

Her tears only fueled his rage.

“Hot one moment. Cold the next. This is payback, isn’t it?”

“No, Ar—”

“Don’t you fucking dare say my name with regret in your tone. You just came alive in my arms, melting against me and flowering the air with your delicious scent. Your sweet lips tempt me at every turn and your tight little body begs for my knot. You haven’t been claimed. Don’t you dare try to run away now.”

How she understood his deep, rumbled words he didn’t know, but the fight drained out of her muscles and heat crept up her cheeks. He wanted to crush her to him and find the calm she’d graced him with scant moments ago, but when he released her arm to caress her face, she stiffened.

“Stop. I need you to leave me alone.”

Cinza darted forward on a sob, but Armyn had years of training and much quicker reactions than she did. He lunged forward and snagged her wrist.

She wrenched downward, trying to unbalance him with the training she’d had as a teen, but he tightened his grip and stood as unmovable as a mountain. A small pop reached his ears before tiny jewels scattered over the paving stones with little tinkling skips.

Cinza’s quiet cry broke through his resolve, but when she fought harder he yanked her toward him. Intending to wrap her in his arms, her tiny fist caught him off guard. It hit directly below his diaphragm, making his chest seize as the organ tightened in agony. His grip slipped but he twisted his hips and caught purchase at the top of her glove. It slipped down her arm as Cinza spun around and batted her wings in his face before her foot lifted to carry her forward. Her sobs attacked him worse than her fist had, but he sucked in a breath.

Releasing it on a growl, he reached beyond the fragile wings and wove his fingers in the hair along her scalp, but her hands shot upward to grab his arm.
